LIP takes part in the New Space Atlantic Summit 2025

Lígia Breda Melo | 15 Maio, 2025

"Event gathered scientific, technological and industrial communities to discuss Portugal’s role in the future of the European space sector. "

LIP was present at the 8th edition of the New Space Atlantic Summit, held on 13–14 May at Tejo Power Station in Lisbon. Organised by the Portuguese Space Agency, the event brought together experts, policy makers, companies and research centres to reflect on Portugal’s contribution to the European and international space landscape, under the theme “Portugal’s Role in the Future of Space – Inputs for a Renewed National Strategy”.

Researcher Rui Curado, head of LIP’s i-Astro group – Space Instrumentation for Astrophysics – participated in the panel “Portuguese Research in Space Exploration”, where he presented the laboratory’s contributions to international space missions. The i-Astro group is involved in mission proposals by ESA and NASA, focusing on X-ray and gamma-ray detection, polarimetry, and the development of advanced instrumentation for high-energy astrophysics.

LIP’s participation in this conference reinforces its commitment to the space sector and to high-level research in scientific instrumentation for space missions. The panel also featured researchers and representatives from the European Space Agency, universities, and national research institutions, highlighting the role of Portuguese science in space exploration.

This year’s edition of the New Space Atlantic Summit was also marked by strategic discussions on innovation, defence, industrialisation, and European technological autonomy, at a crucial time for redefining Portugal’s national space strategy.
