Highschool students learn about radioactivity
"Accompanied by researchers from LIP, ten students visited the Nuclear Physics and Radiation Laboratory at FCUL's DF"
On 26 March 2024, a class of 10 12th grade Physics students from the Professor Reynaldo dos Santos Primary and Secondary School in Vila Franca de Xira, accompanied by teacher Maria Goreti Matos, visited the Nuclear Physics and Radiation Laboratory at FCUL's DF.
The students had the opportunity to carry out various experimental activities, namely determining a half-life period and observing photon spectra from natural radioactive sources (uranium ores).
The contact with experimental physics gave the students a practical and enriching insight into some of the fundamental concepts of nuclear physics that they had learnt in class.
LIP/FCUL researchers Luís Peralta and Carolina Felgueiras accompanied the students on the activities.
