CERN inaugurates Sience Gateway

LIP-ECO/CERN | 07 Outubro, 2023

"The new flagship science education and outreach centre will enable CERN to significantly expand its activities in this domain. Today, it is presented to high-level delegations from Member and Associate Member States, donnors and CERN's research, education and outreach partners. Science Gateway will open to the public tomorrow."

Today CERN inaugurates CERN Science Gateway, the new and emblematic centre for science education and outreach. In an day-long event, CERN presents the Science Gateway to the President of the Swiss Confederation, ministers and other high-level authorities from CERN Member States and Associate Member States, institutions that have contributed financially to the project, and CERN's research, education and outreach partners.

Fabiola Gianoti, CERN's Director General, opened the inauguration ceremony by emphasising the value of education and reaching out to the public: "Sharing CERN’s research and the beauty and utility of science with the public has always been a key objective and activity of CERN, and with Science Gateway, as of tomorrow, we can expand significantly this component of our mission. We want to show the importance of fundamental research and its applications to society, infuse everyone who comes here with curiosity and a passion for science, and inspire young people to take up careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)" she said.

Sara Marques, from Portugal, was chosen to co-host the ceremony with Fabiola Gianotti. Sara Marques participated in LIP's internship programme, in CERN's international student programme and was at ESA in the framework of FCT's internship programme for engineers in international organisations. She is currently preparing her PhD in aerospace engineering.

The Portuguese delegation is led by Ambassador Rui Macieira, permanent representative of Portugal to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, and includes Francisco Santos, vice-president of FCT, Mário Pimenta, Portuguese representative in the CERN Council and president of LIP, André Ortega Costa, counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, and Nuno Castro, director of LIP.

Francisco Santos participates in a round table discussion with the theme "The role of scientific research infrastructures: how can these assets be used better in support of education and training".

CERN Science Gateway will be open to the public as of tomorrow, 8 October 2023 and is aimed at all audiences (from the age of five). The building was designed by architect Renzo Piano and financed through donations, the main contribution coming from Stellantis.
