FLASHGuard among the finalists of the Lab2Market 2025 acceleration program

The FLASHGuard project, developed at LIP in collaboration with the Department of Physics of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), is one of the five finalists of the 9th edition of the Lab2Market acceleration program. This initiative, promoted by Técnico with the support of NTT Data and i-Deals, aims to turn scientific ideas into real-world solutions with societal impact.
FLASHGuard introduces a real-time monitoring system for beams used in FLASH radiotherapy, an emerging technique that reduces side effects of cancer treatment by better preserving healthy tissue. The technology aims to ensure the clinical viability of this approach, which requires ultra-fast and highly precise beam monitoring.
The project builds on ongoing work started at LIP in 2022 and has already received significant recognition: it was presented at FRPT 2024, the leading international conference on FLASH radiotherapy, and won two categories at the JEF Awards 2025, through the work of students Carolina Miranda (master’s level) and Gonçalo Roriz (undergraduate level).
The team includes Gonçalo Ribeiro, Carolina Miranda, Gonçalo Roriz, Pedro Assis, and Patrícia Gonçalves, bringing together researchers and students from LIP and IST across PhD, master’s, and undergraduate levels.
The current edition of Lab2Market will conclude on June 3rd with a final event, where one winning project will be selected. Until then, the finalists benefit from specialized mentoring, market analysis workshops, and value proposition development, reinforcing the bridge between scientific research and technological innovation.
