Gaspar Barreira passed away on June 1, 2019. He was one of the founders of LIP, Laboratory for Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics. He was the Portuguese Delegate to the CERN Council and to the SESAME Council.
Before and after the Revolution of April 25, 1974 Gaspar worked as few in the construction of a Portugal where Knowledge, Freedom and Rationality were decisive. He was one of the founders of LIP, and over the past 30 years devoted to it much of his immense energy. If today we have LIP, which is not just a group of physicists participating in experiments at CERN, but rather a diverse but coherent community of physicists, engineers, technicians, administrative staff and students, engaged in the challenges of particle physics but also of instrumentation, computing and technology, deeply embedded in international and national collaborations, we owe much of it to Gaspar. His last big project and enthusiasm, the installation in Portugal of a treatment and research center for cancer therapy with protons, is not yet accomplished. For this we will strive. He departed, but leaves us an immense legacy of vision, endurance and resilience. Gaspar, the seed has fructified and the tree will stand!
On September 11, 2019, the session "Particle physics: from fundamental science to society, a tribute to Gaspar Barreira" was held at the prime hall of the rectory of the University of Lisbon. It was from the contributions brought to that session, and from others that we could gather, that we set out to build this site dedicated to Gaspar. We warmly thank all those who made it possible!
Mário Pimenta
(President of LIP)
